Despite my problems with Aldnoah Zero – mainly with how it delivers exposition – I honestly think it’s one of the stronger premieres of the season. The premise of an Earth without the moon and a princess trying to settle a war between two different planets is intriguing, and whilst the characters aren’t established yet, the show hasn’t given them a major focus so that can be excused as long as they grow up later. Plus, the sight of people evaporating due to a nuclear missile gives me all kinds of thrills. Looking forward to more of the show.

Mr. Flawfinder (Standing On My Neck)

The first APR top five of the Summer season is more or less how I predicted it would look.  However I may need to pull out a can of crow after seeing Aldnoah Zero’s pilot episode. I didn’t predict it would make the top five but it makes it’s debut at the #1 spot. It brought a lot to the table in terms of it’s exposition and what it hopes to shoot for in the future. I can only wonder if the decision to be a split-cour series will hurt it later on down the road.

Free! Eternal Summer was amazing. Though the ending may be the most memorable part with the incredibly hot Policeman Rin or wonderful mermaid Haru, the episode just delivered the great close friendship feelings and deep character interaction and bonding between the cast. Most amazingly was Rin’s display of many great emotions showing continued lasting growth from the first season and just his bright vibrant smile to Haru constantly. It was good.

Tristan (Population Go)

Free’s first episode was exactly what I wanted it to be and I’m glad they didn’t try to do anything new outside of introducing a new character. Free is going to be Free and I’m a ok with that.

Frog-kun (Fantastic Memes)

Three voters out there actually voted for Sword Art Online II in this week’s APR. You three should feel awful with your questionable taste in anime.

A new season is always exciting. But I was very surprised by how much great shoujo-focused content there is so far. With Sabagebu!, Sailor Moon and Nozaki-kun being my definite favourites so far. It’s nice to see such quality put towards girls series that aren’t PreCure or Aikatsu for once. Was expecting the last Love Live! episode to be on the list, but since it wasn’t I went with Summer series only.

Tobiichi Karlsson (Just Another Anime Podcast)

Going into this season my expectations for Glasslip were sky high and while the premiere did very little to surprise, it also did nothing to turn me away from my initial hype levels. This episode mostly served to lay the groundwork for what is to come and it did so in a very smooth and natural way without any unnecessary exposition to get in the way of our view of the daily lives of the cast. The visuals were superb as is to be expected from PA Works. There were some questionably long still shots but they mostly worked within the nostalgic aesthetic they seem to be setting up here where the events on screen almost feel like something out of a memory rather than the present. At its core, Glasslip is PA Works doing typical PA Works things which is exactly what I want out of my anime.

Kelloggs (Pedantic Perspective)

Glasslip’s pilot did absolutely nothing for me. I didn’t have high expectations going into it nor did I have low expectations. It felt like a very basic introduction of the characters with nothing really to add to it. The bottom line to episode one was some new guy coming into town and throwing a wrench into happy, everyday lives of our main group of friends. Let’s see if the actual “glass blowing” aspect to this show is given any room to breath in next week’s episode.

Thank you to everyone who sent in their ballots this week!! I hope everyone who attended AX had a fun weekend!

I've been watching anime consistently for 4 years now and see no end in sight. I love anything from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, to Love Live, to Precure, and everything else in between. I also partake in video games, Magic: The Gathering, and sports (primarily American Football). I started writing back in 2011 when my friends over at Anime Afterlife Podcast decided to bring me on as a writer and podcast host. But once things started to fall apart there, I was brought on as a writer for Desu Ex Machina. But my time there ended and I decided to take a break from blogging to not only relax from blogging for a while, but to also sort out my personal life as well. Now I'm getting the itch to write again, and so The Anime Kid was born.

  1. Wow! Other than Glasslip, all the anime I voted for actually made it into the top 5. Somebody pinch me.
