Due to the fact that my weekends have gotten way busier than I anticipated they would, I will be extending the deadline for APR to Mondays at 8 PM EST rather than Sunday. Shows eligible for each week on APR will stay at everything that airs until Saturday for the Spring season. Once the Summer season starts that will switch to Sunday. I will go more in depth with this change once we get closer towards the end of the Spring season.

I never anticipated that Mushishi not being on this week’s ballot would shake up APR as much as it did. There were some incredibly surprising outcomes after tallying all the votes. First and foremost, let’s start with No Game No Life. No Game No Life shoots up six spots to reach it’s highest rank on APR this season at number two. And I feel it is well deserved. While this latest episode had some good comedy and other more tantalizing moments, the ending to episode six was astounding. The battle of wits between Sora and Jibril in a game of Materialization Shitori is hands down one of the best moments of the season so far. This is exactly what I wanted out of this show. I’ve been anticipating a truly captivating game between two characters and we have finally gotten what I hope is the first of many to come.

However, the most surprising outcome from this week in APR is that Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure dropped not only out of the five, but out of the top ten entirely. It was one of the lowest voted shows this week only receiving two votes. It ranked lower than Baby Steps, Date a Live 2, Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka?, Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin, and Yowamushi Pedal. There were only eight other shows that either tied with Jojo’s or received a lower score. To be honest I actually enjoyed this latest episode with the Stand user being an orangutan dressed in a captain’s uniform, smoking, and reading nudie magazines. What’s not to like about that? According to all of you, the voters, quite a bit. I would be surprised if Jojo’s stays off of APR for a second straight week.

Last week I said that I would love to see Love Live get inside the top five before the end of the season. AND IT HAPPENED!! YOU GUYS DID IT!! GOOD JOB!! Love Live’s fifth episode was really great putting the spotlight on Rin and actually giving her a personality outside of he tendency to add “nyan” at the end of everything she says. But I think the real winner of this past episode, and what I believe to be the real reason Love Live made it into the top five this week, is the best Umi face we have seen to date. Let’s see if we can keep Love Live in the top five for a second straight week. I believe in you guys.

Nothing much else has changed with APR this week. The same four shows that have stayed in the top five for the past four to five weeks have moved around a bit. Ping Pong drops two spots to sit at number three this week after Akuma’s meltdown from losing a ping pong match to Smile, Mushishi reclaims it’s spot at number one with an axe murdering gardner, Isshuukan Friends jumps up one spot to the number two after introducing a new character whose personality of “No fuck you Kaori we’re friends now so I AM going to talk to you in class and you’re just going to have to deal with it” brings a bit of energy to the series, and Jojo’s sits for a second week at number four with underwater fight scenes and censorship of tobacco use on boats. The only other changes in APR worth mentioning are Sidonia no Kishi dropping out of the top five to number seven this week, and Hitsugi no Chaika making its first appearance on APR landing at number nine. I’m not watching either of those shows so I really have nothing to say about them other than “nicely done” and “lets see how long you stay in the top ten”.

Anime Power Rankings: Spring 2014 Week 5

I’m glad to see that you guys didn’t force another tie for first place this week. Ping Pong was the clear favorite over Mushishi which both had really solid episodes. However, you guys decided to force a tie for fourth place between Jojo’s and Knights of Sidonia. So as a man of my word, I will be picking up Knights of Sidonia this week since it made it into the top 5 for the second straight week.

So I haven’t said a single thing about Isshuukan Friends since the start of APR even though it has been in the top 5 every week that it has aired. Isshuukan Friends has been a very enjoyable show thus far. While the whole premise seems incredibly far- fetched to me, the atmosphere and character interactions is what keeps the show going for me. It’s sweet, charming, and has enough going for it to still keep it fresh and interesting  every week. I also really like the art style of the series. It reminds me a lot of Usagi Drop and the way the characters in that show looked. It’s a really great show and definitely deserves to be in the top 5 each week.

Lastly(and I only bring this up because I love the show dearly) Love Live received a lot of praise this week. The show did not receive a vote lower than second on every ballot it was on this week. I really hope that it can land inside the top 5 before the end of the season because I really like the direction the show has taken so far with putting even more focus on the characters. Love Live is great and everyone should watch it.

Anime Power Rankings: Spring 2014 Week 4

I want to start off and say thank you for everyone’s patience on APR this past week. I had an incredibly busy schedule and losing my internet on Monday and Tuesday did not help either. Anime Power Rankings will return to its regular schedule for this week.

So I had to double and triple check the votes this week. Why? Because for the third straight week in a row we have two shows sharing the number 1 spot. I’m starting to believe that all of the voters are all coming together in some sort of coalition and strategically placing shows on their ballots so that way they end up in certain positions on APR. If this happens again next week, then I’ll know for sure something is up. You guys can’t fool me.

On a more interesting note, we have one show crashing the APR party and making its first appearance in the APR top five. Sidonia no Kishi was sitting way down at number twenty-four last week. This week it shoots up nineteen spots to the number five spot. I’ve heard really good things about the source material for Sidonia no Kishi. The thing holding me back from watching it is the CG. However, if Sidonia no Kishi makes it’s way back into the top five next week, I may go ahead and pick it up.

Anime Power Rankings: Spring 2014 Week 3

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, which was sitting comfortably at #1 the past two weeks, has fallen 4 spots to fifth place on APR. This seems a bit odd to me as I thought this week’s episode was actually rather good. Sure it was less action packed than last week’s episode, but I don’t see how that would cause it to almost, and I mean ALMOST, drop out of the top 5. Or maybe most of you were upset by the ED that finally made it’s appearance. While it’s not the classic rock ballad that I was hoping it would be, it’s not a bad choice. Although I’m curious as to how relevant that ED will be later down the road. I can’t imagine they are going to spend the rest of the series in Egypt (this coming from the person that has no prior Jojo’s experience other than the Jojo’s 2012 so I have no idea what to expect).

What I’m happy to see is that the two best shows thus far, in my opinion, share the number 1 spot on APR this week. While Mushishi was being regular ol’ Mushishi, Ping Pong gave us a really solid episode that tapped into Smile’s mind a bit and showed us the softer side from Mr. Koizumi. I am honestly OK with Butterfly Joe fawning over Smile. He needs to do it all the time. It’s the only way that Smile is going to become a better ping pong player. A little tough love from an old man never hurt anyone, right?

No Game No Life makes it’s first appearance in the APR top 5. I was really interested in this show at the start of the season and I’m glad to see that everyone out there is enjoying it as much as I am. The first episode gave us a brief introduction into this fantasy world run by games and the rules for this fantasy world that our two main characters are thrown into. Episode 2 gave us a close look into the races of this world and their status among each other. It also has opened up what could be the first big game “showdown” of the series between Sora and little Miss Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater who looted Stephanie of everything she had. Things could get very interesting very soon in No Game No Life.

Ladies and gentlemen, this was an exciting week of anime. And the APR for this week just goes to prove that. The two heavy hitters for the Spring season have tied for first place after showing off their second episodes. But the thing I want to point out is that Mushishi not only received more first place votes than Jojo’s, but Mushishi did not receive a vote lower than second on people’s APR ballots this week. I have a feeling that these two shows are going to battle it out each week until the end of the Spring season.

This week debuted the majority of the pilot episodes for this Spring season. In my personal opinion, I believe you all gave third place to the right show. Ping Pong: The Animation, while receiving flack for it’s animation and style, had a very fluid and well directed first episode. I was a bit skeptical about even watching this in the first place with it being a show about ping pong, but I put my trust into Masaaki Yuasa and sure enough he delivered with probably one of the best first episodes of the season. Ping Pong: The Animation is definitely the biggest surprise for me thus far.

It was very interesting doing APR for the first time. As the emails poured in and I saw what was getting voted on most people’s ballots, I saw things that I expected, and other things I didn’t expect. Before I even sent out the ballot on Thursday, I anticipated that Jojo’s, Mushishi, and Nagi no Asukara would be in the top three. But lo and behold we have Captain Earth pushing Nagi no Asukara down to fourth  to claim it’s spot at number 3 for the first week of Spring. It’s also worth mentioning that Nagi no Asukara only recieved five votes for it’s finale, and just going to show that there is a tremendous amount of love for that show.

Next week has a ton of pilot episodes in store for us. I eagerly await to see how you guys vote for them and if we will see Jojo’s or Mushishi hold those top two spots. Or will they be bumped out by a possible sleeper hit of the season?

If I’m going to make another introduction post then I’m sticking with my guns on the header picture. Yes I used it in my introduction for Dexu Ex Machina and yes I do realize it’s an old, outdated picture. But I use it for two reasons:

1. It’s the closest animated representation of myself (appearance-wise that is. I sadly cannot turn water to wine or walk on it for that matter)

2. I still think it’s funny

Secret Answer 3. Because fuck you
